"He gets an ology and he says he's failed..You get an ology, you're a scientist..." (Maureen Lipman to her grandson Anthony who got pottery and sociology in exams; BT advert 1988)

Let's get something clear from the outset. To join u3a Science and Technology Group, you don't need an ology, you don't have to know much, if anything, about science, technology, engineering or mathematics. What you do need is a mind that wants to know the How's, What's and Why's of life. From the smallest invisible particles to the incomprehensible vastness of space and everything in between is what interests us. The meeting's format is often a short presentation or two, followed by SciTec Chat, a talk on any random topic of a sciency nature. That informality can be as interesting as anything formal.

Over the past year we have discussed topics such as : how to find lost hearing aids, pollution and how to fix it, climate change, energy - in all its forms, collapsing bridges, the universe, atoms and sub atomic particles, how hydrogen is evolving underground, the chemistry of life, the science of aging, local flood prevention, space dust and oddities like how nature makes glue, making concrete and how to stabilise your wheely bin in high winds.

The possibility for questions to answer are endless and nothing is off limits. If we don't know, we say so and try and find out for next time.

More recent topics presented by the group members were: Nuclear Fusion Spacecraft, Deep Ocean Exploration, Bridge Disasters, Tectonic Plate Movement, Finding Alien Life, Helium as a rare commodity, the Solar System, and the Importance of silica sand.

Sci-Tec chat items involved Volcanic Eruptions and Radioactivity, the chemistry of water, energy supplies, nuclear fusion and making the blind see.

Join us in the back room of the Tap & Spile pub, Morpeth each 4th Tuesday of the month, 5-7pm. All this and a glass of beer or wine should you wish.
