We started our Geography Group in March 2022 and we meet on alternate months.

Geography is a spatial science. It asks: where are things located and why are they there?

It has many branches, for example population - which parts of the world are densely populated? Why? Which have few people? Why?

And transport - what does the road network look like in the UK? Why does that pattern exist?

A large subsection of Geography is the Physical side which looks at things like climate, soils, vegetation, landforms and the processes behind them. So, in Northumbria we are transected by a line of hard igneous rock which forms upstanding landscapes. It can be seen outcropping at High Force, Crag Lough and Bamburgh Castle.

Some of our topics have included The Geographys of Retailing, Russia, Africa, China, Tourism, Climate Change, Population, Agriculture, Crime and Food Security. In Physical Geography we have looked at hydrology, glacial landforms, desert landforms and soil formation.

In many ways, all life is Geography! Many stories in the news have a spatial, geographical component. Thus our sessions are relevant and provide much opportunity for discussion which the group are always willing to take.

A popular session looked at Urban Geography taking Newcastle upon Tyne as an example.
